Spectacled box crab

Box crabs are so named because of their tendency to form a very compact shape. They are also known as shame-faced crabs as they appear to be hiding behind the chelae (pincers). Spectactled box crabs have distinctive dark patches around the eyes, and a circular patch on the front of each chela. They can be found on most type of sediment, including (as here) sand, and usually partially bury themselves. Dauin, Philippines, April.
